The Phoenix Literary Publication

Interior and Exterior Design

This project was a collaboration with The Phoenix, a campus wide literary and art publication through Milligan University. The theme “Coming Together” is represented by the combining of colorful shapes with different oppacity to layer to create new colors coupled with word synonmns similar to the theme on a typographic path mimicing a topographic map with the type paths getting closer together as they move towards the name.

Working with over 25 plus written and individual pieces, this project presented a challenge to align certain written work with corresponding art work as well as being cognizant of page count and layout. A last minute redesign of the interior layout was requested by the editor due to the incorporation of a dedication of the publication to a beloved student of the school tragically passed after an accident with his track and field team.

Kill Design

After many sketches and pitches, the editor and his team decided on the design with the shapes and topographic map type. Here is one of the kill designs (a design not selected) which I drew influence from Saul Bass’s work. The illustrations and type are all hand drawn to give it a '“hand cut” look similar to Matisse.
